Prima Hybrid Tutorial - How to Open, Organize, and Use a Digital Kit
by Julie Ann Shahin
One of the most satisfying things about hybrid scrapbooking is beingable to download immediately your digital purchases. That's right, at 2 a.m. ifyou are in the mood to scrap with something new - just purchase a Prima DigitalKit and get scrapping within minutes. Let me walk you through the simple stepsto downloading, opening and using a digital kit. I also want to give you a fewtips on organization so you develop good habits from the start.
Opening and Organizing the Kit 1. You've selected your digital kit and paid for it. You will receive aninvoice and download keys. You will just click on the"download" button and chose to save the kit to your hard drive. Ifgiven the choice to open or save, I always "save to disk." I save thefiles right to my desktop. TIP: Saving the kit to your hard drive instead of opening it allows you to scanthe download for viruses. You want to do this with every download before unzippingthe file.

2. Repeat the download task for each kit you have purchased. Be sure to scaneach download once it is complete by right-clicking on the zipped file, thenchose "Scan with Norton Anti-virus".

Once all downloads have been scanned, you are ready to unzip the files. Filesalways come zipped, and you know this because of the zipper icon. Zippingcompresses the files and makes them easy to share. You will not be able to usethe contents until they are unzipped. To unzip, right-click on the folder andclick "Extract Files" or "Extract All" Tip: You need a program to unzip the file such as WinZip or WinRAR
 3. You can now view the contents of your downloaded and unzipped file. Here yousee Trish Jones' Bombastic Papers and Elements. Notice that there is a"Terms Of Use" document. Be sure to read that first and foremost. Thedesigner spells out what you can and can not do with his/her kit. You need adocument writing program such as Word, Open Office Writer or Notepad to readthe terms.
For example, Trish's terms include contact information, copyright information, how to credit the designer when posting online and for publication, what youmay use the kit for such as alter the graphic in respect to size and colorwhile still crediting the designer. Trish outlines what you may not use the kitfor such as submitting a pre-made page for publication and calling it your own.
Parts of the kit include: A. Preview page of the kit contents, useful for organization and tagging B. 12" x 12" Digital Paper C. Embellishment, flattened D. The same embellishment in layers (.PSD format = photoshop document format)

4. Before you begin scrapping, I suggest that you make a habit of organizingyour digital kits and tagging them as you unzip them. Since I downloaded thekit to the desktop, I need to put it in the proper file. I have a file called"my digital kits". As you can see, this file is on my externalhard drive - yours might be within "My Pictures" if you have room onyour C drive. Click on the file "My Digital Kits". Tip: To create a New File called "My Digital Kits" go to the part ofyour computer where you want the file. If it is within My Pictures, go to MyPictures, then right-click and go to New --> File, name the file "MyDigital Kits".

5. Within My Digital Kits, I have the kits organized according to the site theyare downloaded from, and within that according to designer. For instance, Ihave the file "Prima" and within the Prima file, I have files for"Trish Jones", "Vera Lim", and "Weeds &Wildflowers". I put the downloaded kit into the file of the designerwho made it. To move the kit, just drag it from the desktop into the properfolder.

6. Now that the kit is in its proper place or home, you can tag the kit so thatyou can find the items quickly when you are scrapping. I use Photoshop Elementsfor digital scrapbooking, however I use ACDSee Photo Manager for organizing mykits and photos. It is well worth the small cost in order to scrap fasterthrough organization. If you prefer the Photoshop Elements Organizer, there is great information in Patty Dembowski's book Digital & Hybrid Scrapbooking and Card-Making with PhotoshopElements.
7. To tag, I open the ACDsee Photo Manager program. There are many greattutorials at DigiscrapInfo.com to get you started. I have my program set toopen automatically at "My Digital Kits". I scroll down to Prima, andthere are my kits.

8. Next, I tag each item within the folder so that all I have to do to find itis type my search words and the previews will appear. See DigiscrapInfo.com forin-depth tutorials for tagging and organizing.

Using the Kit 1. In Photoshop Elements, open the Editor by chosing "Edit & EnhancePictures."
2. Create a new blank document by going to File --> New --> Blank File orshortcut Ctrl+N. Enter 12" for width and height, and 300 dpi forresolution. Chose white for background contents then click OK.
3. Open the paper that you wish to use by going to File --> Open. Drag thepaper onto the blank document which will be your layout.
4. Open your photo and drag this onto your layout.
5. Open the embellishments you wish to use and drag onto your layout. You cansee that each embellishment is on it's own layer as well as the paper, text, and photos. Advanced digital and hybrid scrapbooking techniques will bediscussed in another tutorial.

6. When you are finished, save the layout as a photoshop document or *.PSDfile. This will keep all the layers in tact so that you can go back and changethem at any time. You may also save the layout as a .JPEG file, however be sureto always keep a .PSD file as your original.
7. To print, go to File --> Print. Often I will print my pages as 8" x8" on my standard printer. Be sure to set your printer properties forphoto quality and paper type.
